Clean Plates Review Of Dirty Bird To Go

Clean Plates

Clean Plates—the essential resource for organic, local, sustainable clean eating— helps everyone, whether carnivore, vegan, gluten-free, Paleo, or somewhere in between, make better, more informed eating choices through its restaurant guides, email publications and app, in print, online and on your phone.

Taste of Tribeca guests who purchase a friends or family table will receive a complimentary copy of Clean Plates New York City 2015 book, the most comprehensive and easy-to-use guide to the healthiest, tastiest and most sustainable restaurants around.

Dirty Bird To Go
155 Chambers Street, Tribeca

Only in New York can you snag an order from a fried chicken joint and realize—after sinking your teeth into a crisp-skinned, slow- roasted rotisserie bird or an astoundingly juicy fried drumstick—that this is grub from a James Beard Award winner. Former Dirty Bird owner and recipe developer Allison Vines-Rushing has worked with international restaurateur Alain Ducasse, and a simple bite reveals her vast skills. The fare this chicken joint is turning out is, believe it or not, good for you. Of course, rotisserie chicken is a healthier choice than the crispy stuff (which is soaked in buttermilk and fried in peanut oil), but every Dirty Bird sent out the door is hormone- and antibiotic-free and locally raised. And if you go for the fried stuff, the oil they use for frying is recycled for biodiesel fuel. Sin with a side of sautéed garlic kale—it’s excellent here, locally grown and dotted with chili peppers and garlic. Although this is a chicken joint, it has a large selection of salads and veggie sides to add an antioxidant boost to your meal.

This restaurant may have you re-evaluating your preconceived notion of the Yiddish term “bubby.” The ardently American menu lists “things we do to make good food for you” which includes everything from frying in organic, non-GMO, expeller-pressed canola oil to sourcing fish, flour, meat and milk from New York State sources. Barbecue, which is slow-smoked on the premises using local hogs and wood, is the specialty here. The basin-size barbecue sampler includes ribs, brisket and pulled pork punctuated with hot pepper flakes, and comes with two sides (we are fans of the sautéed spinach and baked beans). Bubby’s grinds meat daily for its mammoth grass-fed burger which emerges from the kitchen a ruddy medium-rare, its juices forming a beefy puddle for the crisp fries and a homemade dill pickle on the side. To even things out, order a seasonal vegetable plate loaded with farmers-market greens or a side of spinach sautéed with ample amounts of garlic.

Executive chef and New York institution David Bouley has partnered with the Tsuji Culinary Institute of Osaka to prepare traditional Japanese dishes with just a hint of fusion. The restaurant’s main room has the lovely, spare feel of a Buddhist shrine in which every detail is just so, from the large, rice paper–lined windows to the rough, honey-colored wooden walls. Meals are prepared by instructors from Tsuji and overseen by chef Isao Yamada, and are the result of thousands of hours of collaborative research. Traditionally, a kaiseki menu, which originated in the imperial courts of Kyoto, comprises a series of small plates artfully arranged with an eye to color and form and with a strong emphasis on seasonal flavors. Brushstroke offers two such tasting menus per night, but those looking for a lighter meal will be well satisfied with the equally meticulous a la carte offerings, which arrive on the table like tiny, edible still-life paintings. All the meats at Brushstroke are certified organic, and all tofu is sourced from Japan.

A Great Street Fair!

IMG_5953Taste of Tribeca had a great day at the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair! The skies were blue, the weather was (mostly) warm, and we sold a record-breaking number of tickets and merchandise. Thank you to our customers, parent volunteers, GoGoSqueez for donating all those apple sauce pouches, and of course our host, the Tribeca Film Festival.

Speaking of merchandise. We have some amazing new designs this year on our apparel and accessories, like this “Feed Me” baseball tee proudly worn by this adorable model:

To purchase this and other Taste of Tribeca items, be sure to swing by the Merchandise Tent on Saturday, May 16.

Come to the Taste of Tribeca Kickoff Cocktail Party!

2015TOTcocktailparty

Taste of Tribeca 2015 is exactly one month away!

The organizing committee, comprised of parents from PS 150 and PS 234, has been meeting since December to prepare for the big event. It’s a lot of work and we could all use a drink, so please join us at the kick-off cocktail party, being generously hosted by Café Noir at its new Tribeca location on Monday, April 27 from 6PM-9PM. There will be Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres by Café Noir, custom cocktails by Steve Olson, much merriment, and only one or two friendly reminders that we will need your help on Saturday, May 16.

Tickets for the cocktail party are $80 ($90 at the door, subject to availability) and include one ticket to TOT. Buy them here – along with extra Taste tickets for your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.

P.S. TOT ticket prices go up May 1, so act quickly!
